Completed Cellar Projects

A wine cellar can be any dedicated space that stores wine. It could be a separate room in the basement, under a stairway, even a back hall closet. When used with a wine cooling system and the appropriate racking, a wine cellar can safely store your wine, in optimal conditions, for long-term aging and investment protection.

About me

I come from a line of master craftsmen. As an avid follower of “This Old House”, I enjoyed watching the transformation from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. I am always curious – looking for new design ideas, materials and applications. I still follow many home improvement shows today.

Throughout the years I have never been afraid to tackle any home improvement project around the house; from a kitchen backsplash, a complete basement remodel, building decks, and even new bathroom showers.

My love of fine wine, great food and entertainment led me to remodel the basement of my house with a family room, wine storage area, bar and game room. The project was such a success that a friend of mine asked me to build him a “real wine cellar”. Smithling Cellars was born and the Mora Wine Cellar was designed and built.

Through the years my own wine collection has continued to grow - larger than my storage capability, I decided after finishing our second project, the Worden Cellar, to design and build my own cellar. One that reflected my love of wine, great craftsmanship and a show piece for my prospective clients. In 2017 I converted my game room into the Smithing Wine cellar where we entertain friends, and show prospective clients the possibilities.

Why choose Smithling Cellars?

I have an engineering background, a craftsman's attention to detail and experience that gives me the ability to visualize the end-product from start to finish. I can conceptualize in 3D and design very quickly and use the latest 3D software so you can “see” the cellar during the design phase – to get everything just right – before we build. The use of 3D technology really helps you visualize your dream wine cellar.

Why to build a wine cellar?

  • Temperature

Heat is wine’s #1 enemy. An ideal temperature for wine storage is 55°F to 57°F.

  • Humidity

Maintaining a relative humidity helps keep the cork intact. Without ideal humidity, wine quality may be very affected.

  • Light

Direct sunlight and incandescent lights can adversely react with phenolic compounds in wine and create potential wine problems.

  • Vibration

Vibrations of different frequencies have been shown to have their own distinct effect on the chemistry of the wine.

  • Aging wines

Aging means that you store wine in a cool, dark place for several years, allowing the wine to improve as it sits in the bottle.

  • Organization

Organizing wines is knowing exactly what wines you own, where they are stored, when to drink the wines and the value of your collection.

  • Pleasure

Wine cellars easily become a showcase for dinner parties, where everyone can join in selecting wines and opening the first bottle of the night.
